Hi there everyone,

Today, I’ve managed to persuade Clive to share his thoughts on words, even though he insists he’s not a great reader.

Well, I’ve finally agreed to write a short piece for your blog even though I’m not really a reader of books, they’re too long. I decided that in my third year in Primary school and I’ve never changed my mind.

Having said that, I do enjoy reading a daily newspaper, not all of it, just the stories that interest me. And I like to have a go at the cryptic crossword. These days, I will read articles that appeal to me on the internet, too.

I have always been fascinated by unusual words. So, here are a few that caught my eye. How many do you know? I’ve put the definitions separately.

I’ll start with a word that is often used to describe me - Curmudgeon - a great word.

Bellicose, has a nice ring to it for a curmudgeon.

Jocular, I like happy words, too.

Lachrymose, in this vale of tears…

Aberuncate, here’s one for my daughter in law who’s always out in her garden.

Blatherskite,  I’ve met quite a few of these in my time!

Pauciloquent, I prefer this kind of person.

Nudiustertian, My grandson introduced me to this word. Can’t really see it catching on, though.

Thank you, Clive. I’ve heard of some of these words, but I’ll have to check out the definitions of the others! I’ll have trouble dropping them into everyday conversations!

Does anyone else have their own favourite words that they'd like to share with us?

                                                                ***

Curmudgeon: a bad-tempered person, especially an old one.

Bellicose: Quarrelsome

Jocular: Jesting, playful

Lachrymose: Tearful

If you aberuncate the weeds in your garden, you remove them entirely, roots and all.

Blatherskite: a person who talks at great length without making much sense.

Pauciloquent: describes a person using few words.

Nudiustertian:  the day before yesterday.
